Patna: Guru Rahman, a well-known educator running coaching classes in Patna, has openly expressed support for the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new regulations, calling them “historic” and expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The announcement comes as students across the country, particularly from upper-caste groups, protest the rules introduced under the UGC Equality Act 2026.
Sharing his personal experiences, Guru Rahman revealed that during his time as a student at a central university, he faced caste-based discrimination. “I myself am from a general category,” he said, “but I strongly support the UGC Equality Act, regardless of the opposition it faces. Equality will only be achieved when fear exists in people’s minds. When no one dares speak wrongly against others, equality will naturally be established.”
However, the new regulations have faced criticism from student leaders. Saurabh Kumar questioned the necessity of the law, arguing that universities should nurture a civil society where caste and religion do not influence daily life. “This bill may create conflict,” Kumar warned, citing past misuse of the SC-ST Act. “Now, by including OBCs, women, and persons with disabilities, upper-caste students are being left isolated. In the politics of vote banks, I feel marginalized—first to escape from Muslims, now targeted by Dalits.” He expressed his concerns poetically, highlighting the emotional strain and perceived unfairness caused by the new provisions.
