Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh is set to welcome eight cheetahs from Botswana, South Africa, later this month, further strengthening the state’s ambitious wildlife conservation efforts. The new batch of cheetahs is expected to arrive around February 28, and will be relocated to Kuno National Park in Sheopur district.
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav confirmed the development, stating that the state government is actively working on completing all required procedures to ensure the smooth arrival and rehabilitation of the animals. The Chief Minister recently visited New Delhi, where he held detailed discussions with Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav regarding the cheetah reintroduction project and other wildlife initiatives.
Dr. Yadav emphasized that Madhya Pradesh holds immense potential for tourism development, expansion of reserve forests, and wildlife conservation. He said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and with support from the Central Government, the state is taking significant steps towards strengthening biodiversity and protecting endangered species.
Apart from the cheetahs, the Madhya Pradesh government is also planning to bring wild buffaloes from Assam and establish them in the forests of the state. The Chief Minister said that discussions have been held to complete the necessary approvals and formalities for the relocation of wild buffaloes, rhinos, and other wildlife species as part of a broader conservation roadmap.
The arrival of the cheetahs from Botswana is expected to give a fresh boost to the ongoing cheetah reintroduction programme at Kuno, which has already gained national and international attention.
