Earthquake Shakes Delhi; Magnitude 2.8, Epicenter in North Delhi

New Delhi: Residents of the national capital felt mild tremors early Monday morning as a minor earthquake struck Delhi. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake measured 2.8 on the Richter scale and originated approximately 5 kilometers below the surface in North Delhi. No damage or casualties have been reported.

Delhi’s Seismic Sensitivity
This is not the first time Delhi has experienced seismic activity. The city, along with the wider National Capital Region (NCR), falls under Seismic Zone IV, making it susceptible to moderate earthquakes. Last year, Delhi experienced several tremors, including:

  • February 17: Magnitude 4.0 quake near Dhola Kuan
  • July 10: Magnitude 4.4 quake in Jhajjar, Haryana, felt in Delhi
  • April 16: Magnitude 5.9 earthquake in Afghanistan, with tremors reaching Delhi

According to the US Geological Survey, the capital has not recorded any earthquake above magnitude 5 in the past 10 years.

The NCS confirmed that the tremor was of low intensity, posing no threat of structural damage or risk to residents.
