Dutch Biker Welcomed with Heartwarming Hospitality by Haryana Family During Solo India Trip

Gurugram, Haryana: When Dutch traveler and solo biker Mieke Hijman embarked on her journey through rural India, she did not anticipate experiencing such heartfelt hospitality. During her visit to a village in Haryana, Mieke approached an elderly woman working in the fields, asking if she could pitch her tent there for the night. Though the woman did not speak English, she called her son Tushar Gujjar to help with translation, turning a simple request into a touching gesture of Indian warmth.

Mieke, who is exploring India on her motorcycle, explained she was looking for a safe spot to camp overnight. When the woman asked if she was alone, Mieke confirmed she was traveling solo. Concerned for her safety, the woman immediately invited her to stay at their home instead of spending the night in the fields.

At their home, Mieke was treated to hot tea, breakfast, and a traditional Indian meal. She was especially delighted to learn that the tea she enjoyed was made from fresh buffalo milk. The family ensured she was comfortable and had everything she needed for a restful night.

The experience left Mieke deeply moved. She shared a video of the encounter on her social media, praising the Indian philosophy of “Atithi Devo Bhava” — a Sanskrit phrase meaning “The guest is equivalent to God.” This encounter highlighted how deeply hospitality is ingrained in Indian culture, inspiring locals and visitors alike with its generosity and warmth.
