DPR for Bahraich–Jarwal Road New Rail Line Ready, Boosting Connectivity in Eastern UP

Bahraich:
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the long-awaited Bahraich–Jarwal Road new railway line has been finalized and submitted to the Ministry of Railways, giving fresh momentum to the project. Once completed, this 65–70 km rail corridor is expected to strengthen rail connectivity in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, providing the public with faster, safer, and more convenient travel options.

Project Overview

The new line will feature stations at Jarwal town, Kaiserganj, Fakharpur, and a halt at Parsendi Sugar Mill. The estimated project cost is ₹530 crore, slightly higher than the previous estimate of ₹529.96 crore. The location survey, which began in December 2023, is now in its final phase. The project aims to shorten travel time from Bahraich to Lucknow, offering passengers a cost-effective alternative to bus travel, which currently ranges between ₹190–275.

Regional Impact

The new rail line will benefit local communities, traders, and tourists by improving access and promoting economic development in the region. Faster and affordable train services are expected to enhance mobility and connectivity between key towns in Eastern UP.

Railway Development in Uttar Pradesh

According to the Railway Ministry, 49 rail projects have been approved in Uttar Pradesh, covering 3,807 km at an estimated cost of ₹62,360 crore. Of these, 1,323 km of new rail lines are operational, with ₹30,611 crore already spent. The state has seen a remarkable increase in railway budget allocation, from an average of ₹1,109 crore per year during 2009–2014 to ₹19,858 crore in 2025–26, reflecting an 18-fold increase.

During 2009–14, 996 km of new rail lines were commissioned in UP, whereas 2014–25 witnessed 5,272 km commissioned, averaging 479 km per year, more than double the previous period.

Challenges and Considerations

The Railway Ministry emphasized that project approval and completion timelines are influenced by factors such as land acquisition, forest clearance, legal permits, terrain, law and order, and available funds, which can affect overall cost and schedule.

With the DPR now ready, the Bahraich–Jarwal Road rail line is poised to accelerate the development of Eastern UP’s rail network, promising a modern, efficient, and safe travel experience for passengers.
