Dowry Demand Derails Wedding in Bareilly: Groom Seeks Car and ₹20 Lakh, Arrested Before Taking Vows

Bareilly: A wedding celebration in Bareilly took a shocking turn late Friday night when the groom and his family allegedly demanded a car and ₹20 lakh in cash just before the marriage rituals. When the bride’s family expressed their inability to meet the demand, the groom refused to proceed with the wedding and was later arrested by police.

The incident occurred at a marriage venue in Yugveena, Bareilly Cantonment area, where a grand wedding procession had arrived amid festivities. However, moments before the seven sacred vows were to be performed, the groom’s family allegedly raised fresh dowry demands, leading to chaos at the venue.

What Happened

According to the complaint, the groom and his relatives insisted on receiving a Brezza car and ₹20 lakh as a precondition for proceeding with the marriage. Despite repeated attempts by the bride’s family to resolve the matter, the groom’s side remained adamant. As tensions escalated, the police were alerted.

Cantonment police reached the spot and took the groom Rishabh, his father Ram Avtar, and his brother-in-law into custody. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the law, and further investigation is underway.

Marriage Fixed Eight Months Ago

The bride, Jyoti, daughter of Murli Manohar, a resident of Sadar Bazaar under Cantt police station limits, was engaged to Rishabh, a resident of Prem Nagar’s Nai Basti area, about eight months ago. The engagement ceremony was held in May at a prominent city hotel, where the bride’s family reportedly spent around ₹3 lakh and gifted the groom gold jewelry and ₹5 lakh in cash.

A day before the wedding, during the ritual of lagan, the bride’s family allegedly provided household appliances including an air conditioner, refrigerator, washing machine, and ₹1.20 lakh in cash as customary gifts.

Dowry Demand Raised at the Last Moment

Despite these arrangements, the groom’s family allegedly raised the demand for a car and ₹20 lakh during the final stage of the wedding ceremony. When informed that the bride’s family could not arrange the vehicle, they allegedly demanded the full cash equivalent instead. The situation deteriorated, and the groom’s party reportedly attempted to cancel the wedding and leave the venue.

Police Action

Upon receiving information, Cantt police intervened and detained the groom and two of his relatives. The bride’s family also accused a local marriage mediator, Indrapal of Siklapur, of misleading them throughout the process. They claimed that nearly ₹15 lakh had already been spent on the wedding arrangements, in addition to gold ornaments and cash given during rituals.

Police officials confirmed that an FIR has been registered based on the written complaint, and appropriate legal action is being taken.
