Jammu: A mother’s love knows no bounds—even a decade after her son’s martyrdom, she continues to care for him as if he were still alive. In Jammu’s R.S. Pura, the mother of martyred BSF constable Gurnam Singh recently wrapped a warm blanket around his statue as winter temperatures dropped, a touching act that has moved locals and passersby.
Bravery Remembered
Gurnam Singh, 26, was martyred in 2016 while bravely confronting terrorists attempting to infiltrate the Hazratnagar sector. On the night of 19-20 October, Singh successfully neutralized one terrorist and forced the rest to retreat, despite heavy gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades. For his valor, he was posthumously awarded the President’s Police Medal. A statue was later erected in R.S. Pura to honor his sacrifice.
A Mother’s Devotion
Jaswant Kaur, Gurnam Singh’s mother, takes meticulous care of the statue daily, cleaning it and ensuring it remains free of dust. During colder months, she places a blanket over the statue, recalling how her son would ask her to keep quilts ready for him during winter when he was home on leave. Local residents say her gesture is not ceremonial—it is a pure expression of a mother’s enduring love.
Love Beyond Life
Gurnam Singh’s father, Kulbir Singh, said, “Whether alive or not, a mother’s love for her child never fades. Jaswant Kaur continues to care for her son even ten years after his martyrdom. She sometimes weeps quietly or skips meals, and during winter months, she covers the statue with a thick blanket for four months, switching to a lighter one when temperatures rise.” He added that while the statue does not feel cold, Jaswant Kaur performs her duty faithfully, honoring her son’s memory and sacrifice.
For a decade, the family has kept the memory of their brave son alive through these loving rituals—a testament to the enduring bond between a mother and her child.
