New Delhi: In a groundbreaking development in medical technology, surgeons have successfully performed four complex operations from a distance of 1,200 kilometers, marking a major milestone in tele-robotic surgery. The innovative procedure was conducted by Gangaram Hospital, leveraging 5G internet and tele-robotic systems, proving that surgeons no longer need to be physically present in the operation theatre (OT) to perform surgery.
How the Remote Surgeries Were Performed
The patients were admitted in Gangaram Hospital’s OT in Delhi, fully equipped with all surgical instruments. However, the surgeons were located in Vapi, Gujarat, controlling the surgeries through a tele-robotic console. This advancement allows expert surgeons to operate remotely, addressing the shortage of specialists in smaller cities while ensuring patient safety.
Four Surgeries, Four Surgeons
According to Dr. Vipin Tyagi, coordinator of Robotic Services, the four surgeries were carried out successfully by a team of surgeons:
- Dr. Vipin Tyagi performed a kidney obstruction surgery.
- Dr. Tarun Mittal conducted a gallbladder operation.
- Dr. Anmol Ahuja performed a hernia surgery.
- Dr. Mukund Khetan completed another gallbladder surgery.
Dr. Tyagi emphasized that expert surgeons were physically present in the OT as a safety measure to handle any complications, ensuring the highest standard of patient care. He stated that with advanced technology and reliable internet, tele-robotic surgeries are now a practical solution, offering hope for patients in smaller cities and addressing the challenge of limited surgical expertise.
This pioneering effort marks the first time such remote surgeries have been conducted in India, signaling a transformative step in healthcare delivery.
