Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan: The Additional District Education Officer (ADEO) of Sri Ganganagar, Ashok Wadhwa, is making headlines for a significant directive issued regarding Christmas Day celebrations in schools. The order clearly instructs all government and private schools in the district not to compel any student to participate in Christmas celebrations, dress as Santa Claus, or wear Santa costumes. Schools found violating this directive will face strict action.
Confusion Surrounding 25 December
While December 25 is globally celebrated as Christmas Day, in India it is also observed as Veer Bal Diwas, commemorating the sacrifice of the Sahibzadas. Ahead of the day, schools were preparing various programs, but the ADEO’s order has created some confusion among school administrators and parents.
Complaint Triggered the Order
The directive was issued following a memorandum submitted by the Bharat-Tibet Sahayog Manch. District President Sukhjeet Singh Atwal highlighted that certain private schools were pressuring children to celebrate Christmas or dress as Santa Claus. He also emphasized that December 25 has been declared Veer Bal Diwas by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in honor of the bravery of the Sahibzadas.
No Ban on Celebrations
ADEO Ashok Wadhwa clarified that the notice does not ban Christmas celebrations. The goal is to ensure that students are not forced into activities against their wishes. Schools may still organize events if the students and their parents voluntarily consent.
Parental Consent Is Key
Wadhwa stressed that parental and student consent is mandatory for participation. Any complaint of coercion will result in appropriate disciplinary action against the institution.
The order has sparked mixed reactions in the education sector and on social media. While some view it as a positive step protecting children’s freedom, others see it as unnecessary interference. The district now watches closely to see how schools implement the directive.
