Dharmendra’s Fondness for Bhopal’s Gajak: The Untold Bond Between a Bollywood Icon and a Senior Officer

Bhopal: Bollywood legend Dharmendra, popularly known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, recently passed away, leaving the nation in mourning. Among the many personal quirks of the celebrated actor, one that stood out was his fondness for Bhopal’s famous gajak, a sweet treat he cherished. A unique friendship between Dharmendra and a senior government officer, Sunil Mishra, remained largely unknown to the public, yet it endured for years and was marked by warmth and personal affection.

A Quiet Friendship Behind the Headlines

Some relationships never make headlines but quietly brighten lives behind the scenes. Such was the bond between Dharmendra and Sunil Mishra, who passed away during the second wave of COVID-19 in 2021. Their friendship was heartfelt and personal, transcending the boundaries of public life.

A Tradition of Thoughtfulness

For years, Sunil Mishra maintained a touching tradition. He would visit Dharmendra on the actor’s birthday, regardless of where the star was in India, always bringing thoughtful gifts. Sunil’s son, Sumukh, recalls these moments as an integral part of the family’s life.

Gifts and Sweet Memories

Sumukh shares, “My father affectionately called Dharamji ‘Papaji,’ and there was a deep connection between them. They first met when my father was writing an article about him 22 years ago, and the friendship quickly became familial. Dharmendra often sent sweets and small gifts for us, and in return, my father would bring gajak from Bhopal for him, as it was his favorite. On his birthdays, Dharmendra always enjoyed only that gajak.”

Enduring Affection Despite Loss

Even after Sunil Mishra’s untimely demise during the COVID second wave, the bond with Dharmendra remained alive in their hearts. Sumukh reflects with emotion, “Though my father passed away, we still felt connected to Dharamji. Today, with Dharmendra’s passing, it feels like the final chapter of a cherished friendship has closed.”
