Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a noticeable shift in weather patterns as December begins. While the winter season has officially started, the state is yet to experience severe cold during the daytime. Bright sunshine continues across most districts, even as temperatures drop significantly after sunset.
Clear Skies in Day, Sudden Chill After Dark
According to meteorologists, the weather in both western and eastern UP is expected to remain clear on December 3, with shallow to moderate fog forming in the early morning hours. Despite the sunny days, nights are gradually becoming colder.
From December 4 to 5, dry weather is likely to continue across the state, accompanied by morning fog. A similar pattern is expected between December 6 and 8, with no major change in conditions.
Although no warning has been issued for severe cold, residents are already experiencing a noticeable chill during late evenings and nighttime.
Minimum Temperatures Continue to Drop
Several districts have recorded significantly low minimum temperatures:
- Ayodhya – 6°C (lowest in the state)
- Kanpur – 6.7°C
- Bareilly – 6.7°C
- Barabanki – 7°C
- Muzaffarnagar – 7.4°C
- Meerut – 7.9°C
- Lucknow – 9°C minimum / 25.7°C maximum
This trend suggests that winter is gradually tightening its grip, especially during the night.
IMD Forecast: Colder-Than-Usual Winter for Many Regions
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued its December forecast, warning that this winter may feel more intense in several parts of the country.
According to the IMD:
- Cold wave events are likely to be higher than normal in northwest, central, and parts of northeast India.
- Minimum temperatures in central India, northwest India, and northern parts of peninsular India may remain normal to below normal.
- This indicates that nights in these regions could be colder than in previous years.
- Maximum temperatures during December may remain above normal for most states, except in central India, northwest India, and some parts of the peninsular region.
Fog and Cold Winds to Intensify Further
Experts suggest that cold winds from the western Himalayan region, combined with increasing fog, may intensify the winter chill in the coming days. Northern and central India are expected to experience stronger cold spells as December progresses.
