Two shocking cases of dowry harassment have surfaced from Pilibhit and Puranpur, where married women were allegedly assaulted and driven out of their matrimonial homes after their families failed to meet heavy dowry demands.
Pilibhit: ₹10 Lakh and 10 Tola Gold Demanded
In the first case, a woman from Civil Line South, under Sungarhi police station, filed a complaint alleging that her in-laws repeatedly assaulted her for not fulfilling their demand of ₹10 lakh and 10 tola gold.
According to the complaint filed by Mini Jaiswal, she married Vaibhav Bansal of Chhutmalpur (Saharanpur district) on 30 January 2025. Soon after the marriage, her husband and in-laws — including father-in-law Ajay Bansal, mother-in-law Shikha Bansal, uncle-in-law Manoj Bansal, cousin brother-in-law Shivam Bansal and aunt-in-law Reema Bansal — allegedly began pressuring her for additional dowry.
Mini stated that she was frequently beaten, and her in-laws even seized the dowry items given by her parents.
On 15 June, her husband dropped her at her parental home and left. When she returned to her marital home on 23 June, she was allegedly denied entry. Mini also claimed that her in-laws went to her parental home and threatened her there as well.
Acting on her complaint, Sungarhi police have registered a case against all accused. Investigation is underway.
Puranpur: Demand for ₹5 Lakh and Car Leads to Assault
In the second incident from Karimganj, Puranpur, Gausia B accused her husband Kasim and his family of demanding ₹5 lakh and a four-wheeler soon after the marriage.
Gausia alleged that she was tortured repeatedly for failing to meet the dowry demands. On 18 October, the harassment escalated when her in-laws allegedly beat her and forced her out of the house.
Following orders from the Superintendent of Police, a case has been registered against Kasim and 12 other family members, including Khushnuma, Bhino, Noor B, Phool B, Shammo B, Afroz, Rehan Khan, Armaan Khan, Irfan, Akram and Banno.
Police have initiated action in both cases and further investigation is in progress.
