Delhi’s Parks to Get Major Makeover: DDA Unveils Ambitious Redevelopment Plan

New Delhi: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is preparing a sweeping redevelopment of all its parks, public spaces, and green areas across the capital. The move aims to enhance aesthetics, greenery, lighting, and public amenities, including improved play facilities for children.

DDA is currently managing over 16,000 hectares of green cover in Delhi. As part of the redevelopment initiative, the authority plans to make all green spaces both eco-friendly and public-friendly, with the help of private architectural and landscape consultancy firms. A dedicated panel of experts will oversee the design, planning, and execution of this large-scale project. DDA has already issued a Request for Empanelment (RFE) to bring top firms on board.

Four Categories of Green Spaces

The redevelopment will classify Delhi’s green areas into four categories:

  1. Urban Landscaping: Includes urban parks, plazas, public open spaces, streetscapes, and sidewalks.
  2. Environmental & Ecological Projects: Focuses on flood-prone areas, wetland parks, green corridors along stormwater drains, and biodiversity initiatives.
  3. Heritage & Cultural Spaces: Covers parks and green areas of historical and cultural importance, including those around heritage sites and monuments.
  4. Special Projects: Encompasses water-sensitive urban designs, stormwater management systems, urban green signage strategies, and thematic parks.

Eco-Friendly, Public-Oriented Design

The selected firms will conduct site analysis, assessments, master planning, and design development, preparing all technical documentation required for construction and implementation. The panel will remain valid for one year, with the possibility of extension for up to two years based on performance.

Currently, DDA operates 7 biodiversity parks, 11 large ecological restoration projects (including the Yamuna floodplain), and 773 urban parks. With this redevelopment, Delhi’s green spaces are set to become more sustainable, accessible, and enjoyable for all residents.
