Delhi: Wife Murdered Over ₹20 Cigarette Dispute; Husband Commits Suicide

A petty dispute over a cigarette turned tragic in Vivek Vihar, leaving a family devastated. Kulwant Singh, also known as Sanjay or Bunty, allegedly strangled his wife, Mahendra Kaur, over ₹20, and later ended his own life by jumping in front of a train. The Vivek Vihar Police have registered a case of murder.

Incident Details
Police officials reported that Kulwant Singh resided in Kasturba Nagar, Vivek Vihar, with his wife and three children—two sons and a daughter, who had recently married on December 4. Kulwant worked as an auto-rickshaw driver.

On Wednesday around 3 PM, police received information about a woman’s death. Upon reaching the scene, officers found Mahendra Kaur’s body on the ground floor of their residence.

Husband Takes His Own Life
The couple’s son, Shiv Charan, told police that he had gone out to buy a cigarette and returned to find his mother hanging from the ceiling fan. Suspicious, the family alerted the police, who began searching for Kulwant Singh. Locals reported seeing him sitting on railway tracks. When authorities and neighbors approached, Kulwant allegedly ran and jumped in front of an oncoming train, resulting in his death.

Dispute Over Cigarette Money
Shiv Charan revealed that the conflict began when Kulwant asked his wife for ₹20 to buy a cigarette. Initially, Mahendra Kaur refused, but later gave him the money. However, upon returning with the cigarette, Kulwant allegedly strangled her and fled, leading to the tragic chain of events.
