Delhi University Given Time to File Objection in Modi Degree Case

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has granted Delhi University (DU) additional time to file an objection in the ongoing case concerning the disclosure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s undergraduate degree.

The bench of Justices D.K. Upadhyay and Tejas Karia allowed DU three weeks to raise objections over the delay in filing an appeal against the August 2025 order that denied public access to details of the Prime Minister’s degree. The next hearing has been scheduled for April 27, 2026.

Arguments in Court
Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing DU, argued that the case “lacks merit” and “appears to be aimed at sensationalism.” He requested time both to address the delay in filing the appeal and to submit responses regarding the merits of the case.

The petitioners’ lawyer noted that no objection had been filed even two and a half months after DU was allowed to raise concerns about the delay, though the court could condone a “minor delay” of 15–45 days. Mehta countered that issuing a notice could unnecessarily sensationalize the matter.

Background of the Case
The appeals challenge a single-judge order dated August 25, 2025, which had set aside the Central Information Commission’s (CIC) directive to make PM Modi’s degree public. The appeals were filed by RTI activist Neeraj, AAP leader Sanjay Singh, and lawyer Mohammad Irshad. The High Court had ruled that merely holding a public office does not automatically make all personal information of the Prime Minister open for disclosure.
