New Delhi: A tragic accident in West Delhi’s Moti Nagar area on Wednesday evening left two families devastated after a speeding car fatally hit two pedestrians, including a senior citizen. Police have identified the victims and launched a search for the absconding driver. The Haryana-registered vehicle used in the accident has been seized and kept at Moti Nagar Police Station.
Muniraj and Suraj Pal Killed in High-Speed Crash
The deceased were identified as 45-year-old Muniraj, a resident of Nehru Nagar in Anand Parbat, and 70-year-old Suraj Pal, who lived in the Zakhira area. According to police, the car’s driver abandoned the vehicle near Zakhira roundabout and fled immediately after the collision.
Confirming the incident, DCP West Darade Sharad Bhaskar said the Police Control Room received a call around 6:10 p.m. on November 25, reporting that two people had been injured near Zakhira roundabout. Both victims were rushed to a nearby ABG Hospital by PCR staff and later referred to RML Hospital due to their critical condition. They succumbed during treatment.
Driver Still on the Run
Police attempted to record the victims’ statements but they were unfit to speak. Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and families have been informed. The vehicle, which bears a Haryana registration number, has been sealed. Efforts are underway to trace the driver through registration details and documents found inside the car.
Two Families Left Without Support
The sudden deaths have plunged the victims’ families into deep grief.
Muniraj’s nephew Vicky said his uncle worked as a painter and was the primary breadwinner. “He was walking on the footpath when the car hit him violently. We took him to RML hoping he would survive, but doctors declared him dead,” he said.
He suspects the driver was drunk, pointing out that the driver fled the scene immediately after abandoning the car. Vicky also alleged police negligence, saying the accused should have been arrested promptly using the vehicle details.
Eyewitnesses claimed the car was moving at extreme speed—both airbags had deployed. Before hitting Muniraj, the vehicle rammed a handcart and dragged it several metres. A Haryana Transport sticker was found on the car, along with official files, suggesting a possible link to a staff member or officer in the Haryana Transport Department.
Elderly Peanut Vendor Dies While Supporting Family Alone
The second victim, Suraj Pal (70), was a peanut vendor who supported his household single-handedly. Locals said he was financially responsible for a married daughter, who is mentally unwell, and three young children. With no wife and limited resources, he relied solely on his daily earnings from his pushcart.
Residents say his death has left his dependent family in a critical situation, with no immediate support for their survival.
