New Delhi: Delhi residents will soon be able to enjoy a cruise on the Yamuna River starting February, promising a unique recreational experience similar to Goa. The solar-electric hybrid cruise, constructed in Mumbai, is set to arrive in Delhi later this month and will operate between Wazirabad and Jagatpur, covering a route of 7–8 kilometers.
The Delhi Tourism Minister, Kapil Mishra, visited the Mumbai site on Monday to inspect the final stages of construction and shared updates on social media. The government aims to launch the cruise as a gift to Delhi residents on its first anniversary. The cruise is scheduled to depart from Mumbai on 20 January, with an expected 4–5 day journey to reach Delhi. The Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, will inaugurate its operations in February. A jetty at Wazirabad has been prepared as the starting point for the cruise.
Route and Capacity
The cruise will start from Wazirabad Barrage near Sonia Vihar and travel to the Shani Mandir in Jagatpur, completing a round trip of approximately 7–8 kilometers in about an hour. Each cruise can accommodate 40 passengers, who will return to the same point where the journey began. The stretch of the Yamuna river used for this route is already part of National Waterway-110 development.
Eco-Friendly and Entertainment-Focused
The vessel uses modern solar-electric hybrid technology, ensuring zero harm to the environment. Cruise operations will be paused during the monsoon for safety reasons. Passengers will be treated to cultural performances, historical insights about Delhi, and entertainment programs during the journey.
The Delhi government aims to connect citizens with the Yamuna and transform it into a prominent tourist attraction. The initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities and complement the ongoing Yamuna cleaning campaign.
