New Delhi: The capital may soon see a significant reduction in traffic congestion as plans are underway to construct foot overbridges (FOBs) at over 60 locations across the city. The initiative aims to improve pedestrian safety and ease vehicular movement.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has already begun feasibility studies for FOB construction at several key locations. In East Delhi, a study is underway near Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University at Satyam Enclave, while in South Delhi, plans have been initiated near JNU at Ber Sarai.
PWD officials highlighted that at many busy intersections, a high volume of pedestrians crossing roads slows down vehicle movement, leading to long traffic jams. To address this, the government had asked MLAs to submit a list of priority locations for FOB construction. Proposals were received from 70 assembly constituencies, recommending 60 sites. The PWD has now commenced feasibility studies for these proposed locations.
Key Locations Identified for FOBs
- Maharouli Assembly Constituency: 10 locations including Andheria Mod, Chhatarpur Metro Station, Lado Sarai TB Hospital, near Qutub Minar, and Kishangarh Car Market.
- Bawana: 8 locations, including Rohini Sector 24-25 and NH-44 near Sindhu Gaon.
- Narela: 6 locations.
- Janakpuri: 5 locations, including C-1 Block, Tilak Pul Red Light, and Channan Devi Hospital.
- Moti Nagar: 4 locations.
- Adarsh Nagar: FOBs planned near Azadpur Mandi Gate No. 5 and GT Karnal Bus Depot.
- Other areas: Kirti Nagar Metro Station, Mayapuri Flyover, Rani Garden in Geeta Colony, Dwarkadhish Mandir near Welcome Metro Station, and GTB Enclave.
The feasibility studies will evaluate pedestrian traffic, vehicular volume, and available space. FOBs will be constructed at sites where space is adequate and pedestrian density is high.
Why FOBs Are Critical
Many city roads witness large numbers of pedestrians crossing, posing serious safety risks and causing traffic snarls. According to 2025 statistics, 649 pedestrians lost their lives and thousands were injured while crossing roads. In 2024, the number of pedestrian fatalities was 584. The new FOB initiative is expected to reduce both accidents and congestion, making Delhi’s roads safer and more efficient.
