Delhi Sees Surge in Beneficiaries of Free Electricity Scheme

New Delhi: The number of electricity consumers availing the Delhi government’s free electricity scheme is steadily increasing. According to a report submitted by the city’s power distribution companies, nearly 68% of Delhi’s consumers benefited from the 200-unit free electricity scheme in the current financial year.

Zero Bills for Millions

Delhi has a total of 7 million electricity consumers. In 2025, out of these, 47,67,162 consumers received zero bills under the scheme. The number of beneficiaries has grown steadily over the past few years:

The data shows a significant increase in zero-billing consumers over the last two years. In 2022, the number of zero-bill beneficiaries rose by over 9 lakh compared to the previous year, reaching 49,36,040. Although there was a decline in 2023, the numbers surged again in 2024 and 2025. Compared to 2023, the number of zero-bill consumers increased by 32.4% in 2024, and by 11.44% in 2025.

Scheme Impact

The 200-unit free electricity scheme continues to provide substantial relief to households and eligible commercial consumers across Delhi. The government’s initiative aims to reduce electricity expenses for millions of citizens, helping families save on their monthly bills while promoting energy access and affordability.
