Delhi Roads Turn ‘Death Traps’ for Pedestrians: 649 Lives Lost in 2,192 Road Accidents in 2025

Delhi’s roads have become increasingly unsafe for pedestrians, with 2,192 road accidents claiming 649 lives in 2025. Among these fatalities, collisions involving unidentified vehicles caused the highest number of deaths, followed by private cars and two-wheelers.

In addition to the fatalities, 1,738 people were injured in road accidents across the city last year. Pedestrian deaths due to unidentified vehicles numbered 330, with 498 sustaining injuries. Private cars were responsible for 477 accidents, resulting in 92 deaths and 448 injuries.

Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Satyveer Katara stated that the Delhi Traffic Police is observing the National Road Safety Month from January 1 to January 31, 2026. The month-long campaign aims to promote road discipline, raise awareness about traffic safety, and encourage responsible behavior among all road users.

As part of the initiative, the Delhi Traffic Police organized a large-scale walkathon to spread the message of road safety. Around 2,000 participants, including college and school students, NCC cadets, members of the Brahma Kumaris, and other volunteers, took part in the event.

Key officials present at the walkathon included Anil Kumar, ACP Traffic (Road Safety Cell); Sunil Kumar, ACP Traffic (New Delhi); Inspector Manju, Traffic Inspector (Road Safety Cell); and SI Vinita Kaushik (Road Safety Cell). The walkathon commenced from the Traffic Training Park on Baba Khadak Singh Marg, passed through Connaught Place, and concluded back at the Traffic Training Park.

Accident Breakdown by Vehicle Type

  • Two-wheelers: 472 accidents resulting in 75 deaths and 431 injuries.
  • E-rickshaws: 76 accidents with 16 deaths and 61 injuries.
  • Heavy Goods Vehicles: 87 accidents leading to 43 deaths and 52 injuries.

The statistics underline the urgent need for stricter traffic regulations, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and public awareness campaigns to make Delhi’s roads safer for everyone.
