New Delhi: Preparations have begun to construct a mini cable-stayed bridge over the Ghazipur Drain to ease traffic in East Delhi. Officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department have stated that the five bridges on Swami Dayanand Marg, from Shahdara Flyover to Kadkadi Mor, have become extremely old and dilapidated. In view of their poor condition, plans have been drawn up to replace them with modern bridges.
Mini Cable Bridge Near Kadkadi Mor
The new bridge will connect East Delhi colonies near Kadkadi Mor, including Kadkarduma, Anand Vihar Bus Terminal, Jagriti Enclave, and Preet Vihar, facilitating smoother traffic movement. The Bikram Singh Colony bridge will also be rebuilt and widened from two lanes to three lanes. Across this 3.5–4 km stretch, there are four to five bridges, all 35–40 years old, which have now become structurally weak.
Existing Bridges Provide Key Connectivity
The five bridges currently serve residents of Bihari Colony, Bholanath Nagar, Anaj Mandi, Jwala Nagar, Arjun Nagar, Bikram Singh Colony, Vishwas Nagar, and Hans Apartments, connecting them to Gandhi Nagar, East Azad Nagar, Krishna Nagar, and Preet Vihar. Due to their deteriorating state, all of these bridges are slated for reconstruction with modern designs.
First Phase of Redevelopment
In the initial phase, the bridges near Bikram Singh Colony and Kadkadi Mor will be replaced. The mini cable bridge at Kadkadi Mor is ready for construction, while a new three-lane bridge will replace the old structure near Bikram Singh Colony. Local residents note that all bridges over Ghazipur Drain were built around the same time. Although redevelopment plans were proposed ten years ago due to structural concerns, the project did not progress at that time.
This redevelopment aims to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and ensure safer travel for thousands of daily commuters in East Delhi.
