New Delhi: In a major technological leap for law enforcement, the Delhi Police are set to deploy AI-powered smart glasses that can identify criminals within seconds—even in dense crowds. The advanced device, often described as “magical glasses,” will allow officers to instantly access a suspect’s criminal background simply by looking at them.
First Use on Republic Day
According to senior police officials, these AI-enabled smart glasses will be used for the first time during Republic Day celebrations on January 26. Developed by an Indian technology company, the glasses are integrated with the police’s central database containing records of criminals, proclaimed offenders, and individuals under surveillance.
How the Technology Works
The smart glasses are equipped with:
- Facial Recognition Software (FRS)
- Thermal imaging technology
- Real-time connectivity with police databases via mobile devices
When an officer scans a person, the system instantly matches the live facial image with stored records:
- A green signal indicates no criminal history.
- A red alert flags past criminal records or surveillance status.
This enables officers to take swift and informed action without stopping or manually checking individuals.
Effective Even if Appearance Has Changed
Officials say the facial recognition system is capable of matching live images with old photographs, even if a person’s appearance has changed over the years. This significantly enhances the police’s ability to track habitual offenders who try to evade detection.
Added Security Through Thermal Imaging
Beyond facial recognition, the glasses’ thermal imaging feature can help detect concealed metal objects or potential weapons, adding an extra layer of security. This makes the technology particularly useful at crowded events, public gatherings, and high-security zones.
A Game Changer for Policing
With these smart glasses, Delhi Police aim to reduce the need for manual checks, improve response times, and strengthen preventive policing. Officials believe the technology will make surveillance more efficient, discreet, and accurate, marking a significant step toward AI-driven law enforcement in India.
