
Baghpat, February 21, 2026: A Delhi Police constable, identified as Piyush, allegedly shot himself at his home in Azampur Moolsam village, Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh. Police recovered his service pistol from the scene and have initiated an investigation. The body has been sent for postmortem.
Background
Piyush, originally from Baghpat, was recruited under the compassionate quota in 2018–19 following the death of his father. He was unmarried and had an elder brother employed abroad. Reports suggest that Piyush had developed a habit of consuming alcohol, which his family tried to curb.
Incident Details
According to police, Piyush returned to his village on Friday evening. Later that night, while reportedly under the influence of alcohol, he shot himself with his service pistol. He was initially admitted to a private hospital in Baraut and subsequently referred to a higher medical center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police Statement
Suryadeep Singh, Officer-in-Charge of Doghat Police Station, confirmed that Piyush had been struggling with alcohol addiction. “Despite family efforts to counsel him, he continued drinking. On Friday, he consumed alcohol and fatally shot himself,” Singh said. The recovered service pistol is being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
This tragic incident highlights concerns regarding mental health and substance abuse among law enforcement personnel.
