Delhi Plans to Relaunch Shared Taxi Service to Reduce Congestion and Pollution

In a bid to tackle increasing traffic congestion and pollution, the Delhi government is considering the relaunch of a shared taxi service across the capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is set to hold discussions with app-based cab operators to roll out the initiative, with a focus on electric vehicles and enhanced safety measures for women passengers.

Reducing Traffic, Ensuring Convenience
The shared taxi service, suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, aims to reduce the number of vehicles on Delhi roads while ensuring commuters enjoy affordable, safe, and comfortable travel. Government officials are exploring adjustments in aggregator policies to facilitate the initiative, allowing fewer vehicles to serve more passengers efficiently.

Promoting Electric Mobility
As part of the plan, app-based taxi companies will be encouraged to integrate electric vehicles into their fleets, promoting eco-friendly transport. The government is in talks with operators like Ola and Uber to include private electric vehicles in taxi services and gradually expand Delhi’s electric taxi fleet.

Safety and Employment for Women
Women’s participation in driving is a priority. The government plans to increase the number of female drivers, ensuring safer travel for women passengers while creating employment opportunities for women in the transportation sector.

Upcoming Meeting with Transportation Companies
Officials will soon meet app-based cab companies to discuss implementing ride-sharing services, boosting female driver participation, and prioritizing environmentally sustainable operations.

Crackdown on Polluting Vehicles
The Delhi government is also strengthening measures against polluting commercial vehicles. Existing automated fitness testing centers, such as the one at Jhooljhuli, will be upgraded, and new centers in Burari, Nand Nagri, and Tehkhand are expected to start by March next year. Together with five additional testing stations at DTC depots in Bawana, Ghazipur, Savda Ghevra, GTK, and Deechao Kalan, these centers will inspect 2.5–3 lakh commercial vehicles annually, ensuring stricter compliance with pollution norms.

Affordable and Eco-Friendly Mobility
With petrol and diesel prices rising and air quality worsening, shared rides and electric mobility are expected to address both commuter affordability and environmental concerns, making Delhi’s streets safer and cleaner for everyone.
