New Delhi: In a landmark move to promote Delhi as a global event destination, the city’s iconic heritage monuments may soon host weddings and private cultural functions. The Delhi government is preparing a policy that will allow citizens to book select historical sites — including Ghalib Ki Haveli, Dara Shikoh Library (Kashmiri Gate), and Mutiny Memorial (Northern Ridge) — for weddings and special events under a new initiative.
Historic Sites to Open for Private Events
According to officials, the plan is still in its early phase, with discussions underway on how to balance heritage conservation with cultural and private use. Authorities are evaluating various aspects — including booking procedures, rental charges, safety norms, and ways to protect monuments from damage during events.
Apart from the initial list, other locations under consideration include Kudesia Garden, Maqbara Paik near GTK Depot, ancient tombs in Vasant Vihar, Bada Lao ka Gumbad, and several others under the Delhi Archaeology Department’s supervision.
GST Rebate and PPP Model Proposed
To encourage bookings and attract interest, the government is also considering offering GST exemptions on bookings and providing additional facilities for event organizers. Sources suggest that 70 to 80 monuments may be made available for cultural and private functions under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Single-Window Clearance Policy in the Works
Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra had earlier revealed plans to introduce a Single-Window Clearance System for event permissions at heritage sites. The broader vision is to make Delhi a hub for art, music, literature, cinema, fashion shows, live performances, and destination weddings — all while promoting the city’s vibrant cultural legacy.
Ensuring Safety and Accountability
While the proposal has generated excitement, experts emphasize the importance of establishing strict regulations to prevent any harm to heritage structures. “Preserving the integrity of monuments while opening them to public celebrations is a delicate balance,” officials said, adding that security, accountability, and heritage safety will be top priorities in the final policy framework.
Delhi’s Chance to Join India’s Wedding Circuit
India’s booming destination wedding industry has so far been dominated by Rajasthan, Goa, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. With its regal architecture, Mughal charm, and central connectivity, Delhi could soon become North India’s premier heritage wedding hub — provided the plan succeeds in blending cultural grandeur with responsible celebration.
If implemented successfully, the initiative could redefine Delhi’s image — transforming its timeless monuments into living spaces for art, culture, and celebration.
