Ashwani Sharma | New Delhi:
A major tragedy was averted in Delhi on Thursday evening when a moving Mercedes car suddenly caught fire near Tara Apartments, under the Kalkaji traffic circle. A woman and her seven-year-old child were trapped inside the vehicle, but quick action by Delhi Police traffic personnel saved their lives moments before the car was engulfed in flames.
The Car Caught Fire Suddenly
According to police sources, around 6 PM, a Mercedes approaching the traffic signal near Tara Apartments began emitting thick smoke from the bonnet. Within seconds, flames erupted, and panic spread among nearby motorists. The woman inside the car, identified as Chinki, a resident of Kalkaji, began screaming for help while trying to open the door.
Police and Public Showed Exemplary Courage
Traffic officers SI Ganga Prasad and Head Constable Rajkumar, who were stationed at the red light, immediately rushed to the car. At the same time, Constable Rahul from Govindpuri police post also joined in. Without wasting a moment, the officers broke open the door and pulled the terrified woman and her child to safety, seconds before the car was completely engulfed in flames.
Fire Controlled Using Water Tanker
As the fire intensified, the officers quickly stopped a Delhi Jal Board water tanker passing from the opposite lane. With the help of the tanker driver and local residents, the fire was brought under control. Eyewitness Sanjeev Singh said, “If the fire had not been extinguished in time, it could have spread to other vehicles waiting at the signal.”
Family Expressed Gratitude to the Police
The woman’s family members later reached the spot and thanked the brave policemen for their swift action. The Mercedes was completely gutted, but no casualties were reported. Police officials are investigating the exact cause of the fire, which is suspected to have resulted from a technical fault or short circuit in the vehicle.
Timely Action Prevented a Major Disaster
The quick thinking and courage of the Delhi Police officers not only saved two innocent lives but also prevented a potentially massive accident in one of the busiest traffic zones of South Delhi.
