New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the nationwide commemoration marking 150 years of the national song Vande Mataram at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi, on Friday. To honor this historic occasion, the Prime Minister released a commemorative postal stamp and coin, and also launched the official “Vande Mataram” website.
The year-long celebration will run from November 7, 2025, to November 7, 2026, paying tribute to the timeless composition by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, whose words “Vande Mataram” became the soul of India’s freedom movement.
A Symbol of National Pride and Unity
The national song Vande Mataram has long been a symbol of India’s unity, pride, and devotion to the motherland. It inspired generations of freedom fighters and continues to ignite patriotic fervor across the nation.
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the enduring spirit of the song, calling it a poetic embodiment of India’s cultural strength, self-respect, and spiritual richness. He highlighted that the commemoration reflects the nation’s deep gratitude to those who fought for freedom under the inspiration of Vande Mataram.
The Legacy of ‘Vande Mataram’
Composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay on the sacred day of Akshay Navami, November 7, 1875, Vande Mataram was first published in the literary magazine Bangadarshan as part of his iconic novel Anandamath. The song describes the motherland as a divine embodiment of strength, prosperity, and purity, uniting people across regions and languages in a single emotional thread of nationalism.
Over the decades, Vande Mataram became more than just a song — it evolved into a national mantra of freedom and devotion, echoing in rallies, movements, and hearts of millions who dedicated their lives to the cause of India’s independence.
The 150th-anniversary celebration aims to honor this immortal creation, revisit its message of unity and self-pride, and inspire the younger generations to carry forward its legacy.
