Ahmedabad/Vadodara: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has shared a major update on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (NE4), one of the country’s longest and most modern highways. The remaining stretch at the Madhya Pradesh-Gujarat border has been completed and is expected to open for traffic within the next 100 days.
The segment connecting Delhi to Vadodara is slated to be fully operational by May 2026, providing significant relief for travelers from Mumbai and Gujarat heading toward Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi. Once this section opens, commuters will no longer have to detour via Dahod from Jhabua, allowing a direct route to Vadodara. This will also ease congestion on the older highway.
Challenges at Gujarat-MP Border
Minister Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha that minor obstacles, including a power pole, power lines, and land-sliding issues, delayed the opening of the Gujarat-MP border stretch. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project is divided into 48 packages, covering a total length of 1,350 km, of which around 875 km is already open for traffic.
Vadodara to Mumbai Segment
Gadkari clarified that work on three packages from Gandeva to Vapi in Gujarat (Vadodara to Mumbai segment) is expected to be completed by April 2028. Delays in land acquisition, tree-felling permissions, utility shifting, and concessionaire defaults contributed to the extended timeline. The revised completion date for the Delhi to Vadodara stretch is May 2026, while the remaining Vadodara to Mumbai portion is targeted for completion between 2027 and 2028.
This milestone will mark a major step forward in reducing travel time on the Delhi-Mumbai corridor, which is designed for speeds of 120 km/h, offering faster, safer, and more efficient connectivity between India’s capital and its financial hub.
