New Delhi: In a remarkable act of courage and love, an 11-year-old boy from Sultanpur district was saved by his mother at Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi, after being admitted in critical condition with severely slowed breathing. Doctors managed to revive him following a cardiac arrest, revealing the urgent need for a kidney transplant to save his life. This operation marks the hospital’s first pediatric kidney transplant.
Life-Saving Procedure Amid Critical Condition
The child was diagnosed with bilateral hypodysplastic kidneys, a rare and serious kidney disorder. He had been under dialysis care for over a year after being first admitted with the same condition. Recognizing the urgency, his 35-year-old mother made the courageous decision to donate her kidney, giving her son a new lease on life.
Challenges of Pediatric Kidney Transplant
Doctors explained that performing kidney transplants in children is particularly challenging due to the difficulty of fitting an adult kidney into a small body. Despite these complexities, the transplant was successfully carried out.
Expert Medical Team Leads to Success
The surgery was led by Dr. Pawan Vasudeva, Head of the Urology & Renal Transplant Department, with a dedicated team including Dr. Neeraj Kumar, Dr. Shobha Sharma, Dr. Sushil, Dr. Srinivas Vardan, Dr. Mamta, Dr. Sonali, Dr. Kavita Rani Sharma, and Dr. Pradeep. Hospital Director Dr. Sandeep Bansal highlighted that this success reflects months of meticulous planning, expertise, and teamwork by the medical staff.
The operation has brought new hope to the family and stands as a landmark achievement in pediatric kidney transplantation at Safdarjung Hospital.
