New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has decided that the appeal filed by former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar will be heard on a daily basis. The decision came in connection with the Unnao custodial death case.
The court has listed Sengar’s appeal for daily hearings and has scheduled the next hearing for 11 February 2026. Sengar is challenging his 10-year sentence and conviction in the custodial death of the father of the Unnao rape victim. His earlier plea for suspension of the sentence had already been rejected.
Earlier, on 23 December, the Delhi High Court had granted bail to Sengar, who is serving a life sentence. However, the Supreme Court stayed the bail order shortly after it was granted.
Background of the Case
Sengar was convicted by the trial court in connection with the death of the Unnao rape victim’s father while in police custody. The court sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹10 lakh. His brother, Atul Singh Sengar, and five other accused were also sentenced to 10 years in prison.
During the appeal hearing, Sengar argued that he has already served around nine years in prison and only 11 months of his sentence remain. Meanwhile, the victim’s lawyer, Mahmood Pracha, strongly opposed any grant of bail, arguing that releasing Sengar would pose a serious threat to the victim and her family.
The Delhi High Court has previously remarked that no leniency can be shown in cases involving the death of a family’s sole earning member while in custody.
