The Delhi High Court has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to take strict action against illegal vendors and encroachments in the Mandawali area, which have been causing severe inconvenience to residents and commuters. Heavy congestion and traffic jams have become a daily issue on the main road due to these encroachments.
Justice Amit Bansal has given the MCD and the Public Works Department (PWD) four weeks to submit a status report on the action taken. The next hearing is scheduled for March 16, 2026. During the January 23 hearing, the Special Task Force lawyer informed the court that the MCD had not yet taken any measures against the encroachments.
The case was filed by advocate Jay Chaudhary on behalf of local residents, through advocates Utkarsh Soni and Siddharth Goyal. The petition highlighted that encroachments and unauthorized parking along Shri Ram Chowk, Mandawali, East Delhi pose a serious safety risk, obstruct emergency vehicles, and disrupt daily traffic flow. The MCD, SDM Preet Vihar, DDA’s Special Task Force, and Delhi Government’s PWD were named as respondents.
According to the petitioner, the main road starting from Shri Ram Chowk is the only accessible route connecting the village, residential areas, and schools to the city’s main roads. Residents rely on it daily, including children, the elderly, women, and working professionals. The petition stressed that clearing the encroachments is essential to ensure safe and smooth passage for all citizens.
