The Delhi High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Mudassir Kazmi, accused of tampering with the IMEI numbers of stolen mobile phones and selling them. Kazmi claimed he was innocent and falsely implicated.
Police, however, alleged that Kazmi, along with his brother and other associates, ran a mobile phone business involving over ₹4 crore in transactions. During the investigation, stolen phones were recovered from his shop.
Justice Girish Kathpalia, on January 22, dismissed Kazmi’s plea, stating that due to the ongoing investigation and the need for custodial interrogation, the case was not fit for anticipatory bail. Kazmi had sought relief under Sections 303(2)/318(4)/3(3) of the relevant FIR.
Kazmi’s lawyer, Rajan Chaudhary, argued that his client had no role in his brother Mujammil’s alleged activities and was being targeted merely for owning the shop.
Additional Public Prosecutor Raghu Indra Verma strongly opposed the bail, presenting Axis Bank records showing business transactions exceeding ₹4 crore. The court noted that if the phones were not stolen, there would be no reason to tamper with their IMEI numbers, directly contradicting the defense’s claim.
The case continues as authorities prepare to take Kazmi into custody.
