The Delhi government is planning to redevelop the site of the Rajghat Power Plant along the Yamuna River into a vibrant Nightlife Zone, designed as a model for environmental conservation, youth empowerment, and cultural revival. The proposed plan combines modern urban design with Delhi’s rich heritage, offering residents and tourists a unique space for recreation, learning, and entertainment.
Elevated Park Inspired by New York’s High Line
A 2.33-kilometer elevated park is proposed on the old railway line, featuring LED-lit walkways, solar-powered lighting, and seating made from recycled materials. Echoing New York’s High Line, the park aims to provide a scenic promenade with sustainable and eco-friendly design elements. Plans also include zero-emission solar pedal boats, inspired by Amsterdam’s canals, to promote eco-tourism.
24×7 Youth Learning and Recreation Hub
A dedicated six-acre youth hub will include round-the-clock study and activity zones, drawing inspiration from Raipur’s Nalanda campus. Facilities will include a library, free Wi-Fi, computer access, open-air reading spaces, basketball and volleyball courts, and an amphitheater. A nominal fee will be charged for students—₹200 for BPL category, ₹500 for others—with a refundable membership of ₹2,500.
A Taste of Old Delhi
The redevelopment will feature a 500-meter food street along the Yamuna promenade, offering the flavors of Old Delhi, including chaat, kebabs, momos, and other street foods. Licensed vendors will be allowed to operate here, ensuring hygiene and quality. Additionally, a Weekend Night Market on Fridays and Saturdays will allow artisans from Chandni Chowk, Delhi Haat, and Janpath to showcase handicrafts, jewelry, textiles, and live demonstrations, supporting small businesses and cultural entrepreneurship.
Connectivity, Parking, and Transportation
To enhance accessibility, the government plans extended metro services from ITO until 1 AM on weekends, DTC e-buses from Kashmere Gate/LTO, and e-rickshaw connectivity. A multi-level parking facility will be built near Rig Road to accommodate visitors.
Late-Night Heritage Museum and Entertainment
The Nightlife Zone will include a Late-Night Heritage Museum, featuring sound-and-light shows that narrate Delhi’s history, revolutionary movements, and power sector heritage. Open until midnight, the museum aims to boost educational tourism.
Pedestrian-Friendly Streets and Open-Air Theaters
Inspired by Toronto’s Distillery District, a 10-acre pedestrian-only street will be developed with multi-level cafes offering views of the Yamuna and Delhi skyline. Following the model of London’s Battersea Power Station, the project will also feature open-air theaters with a seating capacity of 500–1,000 for concerts, qawwali nights, live performances, and DJ events.
Once completed, the Rajghat Nightlife Zone is set to become Delhi’s new hub where history, modernity, and entertainment converge, offering an unmatched experience for locals and tourists alike.
