New Delhi: In a major step to protect citizens’ personal information, the Delhi government is set to introduce an “Aadhaar Vault” to safeguard data shared while applying for government services. The new system will ensure that Aadhaar numbers and other sensitive personal details remain secure and cannot be leaked.
A Strong Measure Against Digital Fraud
The Aadhaar Vault will store citizens’ information—including Aadhaar numbers, names, addresses, and photographs—in an encrypted format using unique tokens. Government departments will access the data only in this encrypted form. This initiative is aimed at preventing digital fraud resulting from data leaks.
Enhanced Data Privacy and Security
According to senior government officials, the system will ensure that sensitive information of applicants is not exposed on external platforms. The Aadhaar Vault will allow the use of data solely for authorized purposes. The Delhi government’s IT department has been collaborating with C-DAC for several months to implement this secure framework.
How It Works
The Aadhaar Vault operates on a highly secure, encrypted system. Each Aadhaar number is replaced with a reference key, which can only be linked to the original Aadhaar number within the vault itself. Outside of the vault, the data appears only in its encrypted form, ensuring privacy even if accessed on other networks.
Trial Completed
The Aadhaar Vault has already undergone trials on the NIC staging server, where updates and modifications to live websites and portals are tested. Trial reports have been submitted to C-DAC. The vault will integrate data from platforms such as the e-District portal and the Unified Data Hub (UDH), with the actual Aadhaar number visible only inside the secure vault.
This initiative is a significant move towards strengthening digital privacy for Delhi residents while reducing the risk of misuse of sensitive information.
