Delhi Government Allocates ₹500 Crore to MCD to Strengthen City’s Sanitation

New Delhi: In a major step to make Delhi cleaner and reduce pollution, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced a one-time financial assistance of ₹500 crore to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The fund aims to strengthen the city’s sanitation system, improve waste management, and support minor road repairs.

Government Commitment to Long-Term Support
CM Gupta also stated that to ensure sustainable improvements, the government will continue to provide annual assistance of ₹300 crore to MCD. On Friday, during a high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, a copy of the official order releasing the ₹500 crore was handed over to the MCD Mayor.

Officials Present at the Meeting
The meeting was attended by Delhi’s Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, MCD Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, Chairperson of MCD Standing Committee Satya Sharma, Leader of the House Pravesh Vahi, Delhi Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma, and MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, along with other senior officials. Following the meeting, CM Gupta highlighted that the additional fund will significantly enhance sanitation in the capital.

Planned Utilization of Funds

  • Settling dues of private contractors handling waste management to ensure smooth operations.
  • Covering monthly operational deficits for waste collection and transportation.
  • Targeted waste removal from areas currently not served by contractors.
  • Minor road repairs, including pothole filling and patch repairs, as well as measures to reduce dust pollution.

Strict Guidelines for Use
The Chief Minister instructed MCD that the fund must be used strictly for approved purposes and not diverted to any other schemes. The corporation is required to comply with all financial regulations, monitor expenditures closely, and submit periodic progress reports and utilization certificates.

Focus on Clean and Pollution-Free Delhi
CM Gupta emphasized that for Delhi to truly develop as a modern capital, it must be clean and pollution-free, which requires a robust and efficient sanitation system. She also recommended that MCD invest in modern cleaning equipment, upgrade existing waste-to-energy plants, set up new plants, and streamline the collection and segregation of wet and dry waste to improve overall efficiency.
