New Delhi: Cybercriminals in Delhi are increasingly exploiting WhatsApp hacking and call forwarding techniques to defraud unsuspecting victims. In a recent case from South-East Delhi, a school teacher lost nearly ₹7 lakh after her WhatsApp account was compromised. The South-East District Cyber Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
Incident Involving a Teacher
The 52-year-old victim, residing in Jamia Nagar, works as a teacher at an MCD school. Between July and August 2025, hackers gained access to her WhatsApp account, replacing her profile picture with a tractor image and sending suspicious links regarding fake bills to her contacts. When the victim attempted to regain access, she contacted WhatsApp support, which restored her account, citing a technical glitch.
Call Forwarding Exploit
The fraud took a more dangerous turn when all incoming voice and video calls to the victim’s number were found to be forwarded to two unknown numbers. Cybersecurity experts believe the hackers used this method to bypass OTP verification, granting them access to the victim’s bank accounts.
Nearly ₹7 Lakh Stolen in a Single Day
On August 29, 2025, the victim received multiple notifications from her Bank of Baroda account showing unauthorized debits. Investigations revealed that an unknown individual had created a UPI ID using her phone number and conducted multiple transactions, siphoning off ₹6,98,332. The teacher immediately froze her bank account and filed a written complaint with the Cyber Cell, which has now initiated a detailed investigation.
Authorities have warned the public to remain vigilant, secure their devices, and regularly monitor bank accounts for suspicious activity.
