Srinigar/Faridabad: In a major development in the Delhi Red Fort car blast case, authorities have revealed that Dr. Shaheen Sayeed, a resident of Lucknow and faculty member at Al-Falah University, was in contact with Afirah Bibi, the wife of Umar Farooq, the mastermind of the 2019 Pulwama attack. Investigators probing the links of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in the Delhi blast and Faridabad explosive seizure have confirmed this connection.
Role in Radical Recruitment
Sources indicate that Dr. Shaheen Sayeed was involved in recruiting women for extremist activities under JeM’s newly formed female wing, Jamat-ul-Mominat, which Afirah Bibi advises. Dr. Shaheen was reportedly tasked with establishing the group’s India branch and facilitating terrorist recruitment. She was also in contact with Sadia Azhar, the younger sister of JeM chief Masood Azhar. Investigators believe these connections played a role in planning activities leading up to the Delhi blast.
Personal Background
Dr. Shaheen Sayeed was previously married to Dr. Zafar Hayat, from whom she divorced in 2013. She has two children who currently live with her ex-husband. Colleagues noted that Dr. Shaheen often left work without informing anyone. She holds a Pulmonology degree completed in 2006 and served as a professor at Al-Falah University. Her father has reportedly expressed disbelief over her alleged involvement in extremist activities.
This revelation adds a significant layer to ongoing investigations into terror networks operating through educational institutions, highlighting the need for enhanced security and scrutiny of radical recruitment activities in academic settings.
