
New Delhi: AIIMS Delhi has achieved a remarkable milestone, performing over 10,000 major surgeries in a single year, marking a new record for the prestigious hospital. The procedures ranged from complex cancer surgeries to kidney transplants, showcasing the hospital’s advanced surgical capabilities.
According to AIIMS, in 2025, the General Surgery Department conducted 10,096 major operations and 17,408 minor procedures. Additionally, the hospital completed more than 1,100 transplant and related surgeries, establishing AIIMS as a national hub for organ transplants.
Advanced Surgical Techniques
Dr. Sunil Chumber, Head of the Surgery Department, said, “This achievement reflects the dedication and teamwork of our medical staff. We now use robotic and laparoscopic techniques, which have significantly increased surgical efficiency.”
Dr. V.K. Bansal, Professor of Surgery, highlighted the hospital’s enhanced infrastructure: “Our surgery block now has 8 operation theatres, including 7 for planned surgeries and 1 reserved for emergencies. The mortality rate for elective surgeries was just 0.3%, while emergency surgeries recorded 7.89%, reflecting high standards of patient care.”
Training Future Surgeons
Every year, nearly 1,000 medical students receive modern surgical training at AIIMS, strengthening medical infrastructure across the country.
Transplants and Patient Demographics
AIIMS has become a leading transplant center, with kidney and donor surgeries being the most prominent. Patients under 20 years accounted for 18%, ages 20–60 for 71%, and those over 60 for 10.6% of transplant procedures. Most surgeries addressed abdominal conditions, including liver, pancreas, and bile duct operations.
This record highlights AIIMS Delhi’s ongoing commitment to medical excellence, innovation, and patient care, setting new benchmarks in Indian healthcare.
