Dehradun: In a decisive move to ensure student safety, the Dehradun district administration has announced plans to demolish 79 schools identified as structurally unsafe. District Magistrate (DM) Savin Bansal has issued strict orders for the action, following reports that these schools posed serious risks to children.
Unsafe Schools Identified
The decision comes after a survey conducted by the Education Department in response to concerns over the safety of school buildings. Within just 10 days, the department submitted a comprehensive report to the DM, revealing that 79 schools — 66 primary and 13 middle schools — were severely dilapidated. The findings prompted immediate administrative action.
Strict Administrative Measures
DM Savin Bansal had earlier displayed a firm stance when the issue surfaced, even seizing official vehicles of the Chief Education Officer and the District Education Officer to expedite accountability. The administration allocated ₹1 crore for the demolition campaign, ensuring that funding would not be a constraint. The Public Works Department (PWD) has been instructed to prepare estimates and carry out the demolition safely and promptly.
No Disruption to Education
Authorities have assured that educational activities will not be disrupted during the process. Alternative arrangements have already been made for 63 of the affected schools, with plans underway for the remaining 16. Additionally, 17 partially dilapidated schools will undergo repairs, and 8 schools have been exempted from demolition.
Focus on Student Safety
Emphasizing the urgency of the action, DM Bansal stated that Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has issued strict directives that children’s lives must never be put at risk. “Budget constraints will not come in the way of removing unsafe buildings,” he said, underlining the administration’s commitment to student safety.
With the demolition set to begin soon, the Dehradun administration is taking proactive steps to ensure both safety and continuity of education for its students.
