Dehradun: A recent clash in Vikasnagar Main Market, Dehradun, involving two Kashmiri brothers and local shopkeeper Sanjay Yadav has taken a new turn, as Yadav’s wife has now filed allegations against the youths.
Sanjay Yadav was arrested by police and produced in court on Friday, after which he was sent to 14 days of judicial custody.
Allegations by the Shopkeeper’s Wife
Yadav’s wife lodged a formal complaint at Vikasnagar Police Station, claiming that the Kashmiri youths behaved indecently towards her. She alleged that the youths made obscene gestures, grabbed her hand, and tried to pull her towards them. She stated that the incident occurred while she was attending to the shop with her husband, and when her husband intervened, the situation escalated into a confrontation.
Speaking to the media, she denied claims that the youths had first asked about her family’s religion or caste. “We have been running this shop for 30–32 years without any incident. We serve customers regardless of their religion,” she said. She added that the youths attacked her husband and called others, worsening the situation. Police have confirmed that her allegations are under investigation, and action will be taken based on factual findings.
Side of the Victims
The incident occurred on 28 January at a shop on Dakpathar Road, Vikasnagar, when the Kashmiri brothers, Danish and Tawish, came to purchase snacks. In their complaint to the police, Danish stated that they reside in Paonta Sahib, Himachal Pradesh, and run a street vending business. They had come to Dehradun to help their father and sell shawls and suits.
According to the complaint, Sanjay Yadav asked for their names and addresses, and upon learning they were Kashmiri, hurled casteist abuse. When the youths protested, Yadav and two unidentified men allegedly assaulted them with sticks. Both brothers sustained injuries, with the younger suffering a serious head injury and a fractured hand.
Police Action and Investigation
Vikasnagar Police Station in-charge Mayank Tyagi confirmed that Sanjay Yadav was arrested, a case filed against him, and both parties’ complaints are under investigation. Authorities are examining communal aspects as well as allegations of indecent behavior, and further action will follow based on findings.
