Basti, UP: In a bizarre and shocking turn of events, the police in Basti were left astounded when a woman, declared dead, walked into the police station alive. Priyanka Prajapati, whose murder had been under investigation for the past two years, was found living happily with her second husband Mangal Chandra in Rajasthan. The mystery was uncovered when an OTP (One-Time Password) alert on her first husband’s phone revealed her identity.
The Strange Story of Priyanka Prajapati
Priyanka hails from Pilkhayen village in the Captain Ganj police jurisdiction. She married Sandeep, a Basti resident, on 14 May 2017, and the couple had a son. After eight years of marriage, differences arose, prompting Priyanka to leave her in-laws’ house, taking jewelry worth lakhs with her. Soon after, she attempted suicide multiple times with her child but survived each attempt.
In 2024, an FIR was filed at Captain Ganj police station registering her death. The case proceeded in court, naming her parents and relatives as accused in her alleged murder and tampering with evidence. Her family endured the stigma and trauma of her “death” for two years.
New Life in Rajasthan
Exhausted and seeking solace, Priyanka traveled to Ayodhya to seek blessings at Lord Ram’s temple. There she met Mangal Chandra from Rajasthan, and decided to abandon her suicide attempt and start afresh. Priyanka relocated to Rajasthan with Mangal Chandra and began living as his wife.
First Husband Turns Detective
Sandeep, distressed over his wife’s disappearance, initially believed she had been murdered. Influenced by villagers, he even approached the court seeking justice for his “murdered” wife. Meanwhile, Priyanka’s parents faced charges at Captain Ganj police station for allegedly killing and disposing of her body.
OTP Reveals the Truth
The truth emerged when Sandeep received an OTP message on his phone regarding changes to Priyanka’s Aadhaar card. Realizing she was alive, he informed the police. A subsequent investigation led authorities to Rajasthan, where Priyanka was found safe.
Police Statement
ASPP Shyamkant confirmed, “An FIR for the murder of a woman was filed at Captain Ganj police station in 2024. During the ongoing investigation, Priyanka was found alive. The case had been registered in court, and she has already provided her statement before the magistrate.”
This extraordinary case highlights how a missing person can be mistakenly declared dead, and how technology, such as OTP verification, can uncover long-hidden truths, finally reuniting families with reality.
