Darbhanga, Bihar: The city of Darbhanga is reeling after the brutal rape and murder of a six-year-old girl, which has sparked widespread outrage and violent protests. Following the tragic incident, police have arrested six youths accused of rioting, while FIRs have been filed against 43 named individuals and 50 unidentified persons for causing public disorder and damaging property.
The heinous crime occurred on Saturday night in the University Police Station area, where the child was sexually assaulted and murdered. The main accused, Vikas Mahto, has been sent to judicial custody. However, violent demonstrations erupted across the city on Sunday, including road blockages and arson, prompting authorities to bring in additional forces from Madhubani district to restore order.
Police Action and Arrests
Authorities reported strict action in areas such as Kadirabad and Bela Durga Temple, where rioting took place. So far, six individuals, including Shravan Sah and Vikas Sahni, have been arrested based on CCTV footage and video evidence. Police continue to identify others involved in the violence.
Student Union Protest
On Monday, the Mithila Student Union (MSU) staged a major protest at Laheriasarai Tower. District president Neeraj Krantikari and University president Anish Choudhary demanded the prompt execution of the perpetrators and called for the dismissal of Darbhanga SSP Jagunath Reddy. Protesters criticized the administration for laxity, claiming it emboldened criminals, and warned that the movement could escalate from the streets to the legislative assembly if justice is delayed.
Political Reactions and Compensation Demands
The case has also stirred political debate. A Congress delegation, led by district president Dayanand Paswan, met the victim’s family and criticized the state government for failing to protect children despite the “Beti Bachao” slogan. They demanded a speedy trial, the death penalty for the culprits, and ₹10 lakh in compensation for the family, along with housing support under the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme.
The incident has ignited anger across Darbhanga, with students, political activists, and residents demanding justice and accountability, as authorities continue their investigation into both the crime and subsequent unrest.
