Saharanpur: A tragic incident in Saharanpur’s Chhutmalpur town has brought to light the devastating impact of prolonged family discord, after a 20-year-old D-Pharma student allegedly died by suicide. The young man’s death not only shattered the family but also triggered a bitter confrontation between his estranged parents, even over his final rites.
The deceased, identified as Vansh, was the only son of the couple and lived with his mother Rita Rani and two sisters in a rented room in Chhutmalpur’s New Basti area. On Saturday morning, Vansh followed his usual routine—he bathed, got dressed, dropped his younger sister at tuition, and returned home. Around 8 a.m., he posted a cryptic WhatsApp status reading, “It seems death will come in youth.” Shortly thereafter, he allegedly took his own life by hanging himself from a ceiling fan using a muffler.
Neighbours Rush, but Too Late
When Rita Rani entered the room for household work, she found her son hanging. Her screams alerted neighbours, who rushed Vansh to a nearby hospital. Doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police reached the spot soon after, took the body into custody, and sent it for post-mortem examination. According to police officials, prima facie the case appears to be suicide, and no formal complaint has been filed by either side so far.
Parents Living Separately for Nearly a Decade
Vansh’s family background is being seen as a major factor behind his mental distress. His mother, Rita Rani, works as an ASHA worker, while his father, Jitendra, is a painter by profession. Due to long-standing marital disputes, the couple had been living separately for the past 8–10 years. Rita lived with the children in Chhutmalpur, while Jitendra resided in their native village, Kamalpur.
Sources close to the family said Vansh was deeply affected by his parents’ separation and frequent conflicts, which left him emotionally broken over time.
Balancing Studies and Work
Despite the turmoil at home, Vansh was trying to shoulder family responsibilities. He pursued his D-Pharma studies during the day and worked night shifts at a private company to support the household. Friends described him as quiet and disciplined but noted that he had appeared increasingly stressed in recent weeks.
Four days before the incident, Jitendra had visited Chhutmalpur to meet the children. During the visit, a heated argument reportedly broke out between the parents, after which Vansh seemed even more disturbed.
Blame Game After Death
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the parents’ conflict continued even after their son’s death. Jitendra and his relatives accused Rita Rani of driving Vansh to suicide, while Rita and her family held Jitendra responsible. The situation became so tense that police had to intervene to prevent further escalation.
Dispute Over Final Rites
The discord extended to Vansh’s last rites as well. After the post-mortem, Rita took the body to the Chhutmalpur cremation ground with the help of her brothers, while Jitendra insisted that the last rites be performed in the ancestral village of Kamalpur. Amid the dispute, the cremation was ultimately carried out in Chhutmalpur.
The tragic death of a young student has once again highlighted the silent emotional toll of family conflict and the urgent need for mental health support for students struggling under academic, financial, and personal pressures.
