Patna, January 17, 2026: What began as a traditional Dahi-Chura feast in Bihar on the occasion of Makar Sankranti quickly transformed into a stage for political maneuvering. The Luv-Kush community, through its National Luv-Kush Seva Sangh, leveraged the gathering to present key demands to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, bringing caste-based reservation issues to the forefront.
Feast with a Political Edge
The event, held at the residence of Nitish Kumar’s close associate Sanjay Gandhi, saw a congregation of influential leaders, including the Chief Minister himself, Minister Shravan Kumar, Upendra Kushwaha (National President of Ralomo), Panchayat Minister Deepak Prakash, JDU state president Umesh Kushwaha, and other senior leaders. The feast served not just as a social gathering but also as a platform for the Luv-Kush community to showcase its organizational strength and political influence.
Key Demands Presented
The National Luv-Kush Seva Sangh outlined a series of significant demands during the event:
- Formation of a Luv-Kush Commission – Modeled after the existing commission in Rajasthan, aimed at empowering the community in social, political, and administrative domains.
- Reservation in Panchayat Elections – The community seeks reserved seats in local bodies, including 8,053 Mukhiya posts, 11,307 Gram Kachahri ward members, 11,497 Panchayat Samiti members, over 113,307 Panch posts, and 1,162 Zila Parishad positions.
- Establishment of Ashoka Pillar – Proposed near Marine Drive in Patna to honor the community and its heritage.
- Extension of Backward Class Benefits – Advocating for reservation for the “Backward” category, similar to provisions for the “Extremely Backward” community.
Community Leaders Speak
Santosh Kushwaha, Coordinator of the National Luv-Kush Seva Mission, emphasized the necessity of a Luv-Kush Commission to ensure the community progresses across all sectors. He further reiterated the demand for Panchayat-level reservations, arguing that if Extremely Backward classes receive such benefits, the Backward classes should also be included.
Political Implications
The Dahi-Chura feast, traditionally a cultural and social gathering, has now become a strategic avenue for the Luv-Kush community to press for recognition and rights, highlighting the interplay of tradition and politics in Bihar. With their demands formally presented to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the community aims to secure a stronger voice in upcoming local elections.
