Gaya (Bihar): In a remarkable and emotional incident, the cries of a newborn echoed through the noise of arriving and departing trains at Gaya Junction when a woman delivered her baby on a foot overbridge inside the railway station. The incident occurred between Platforms 2 and 3, where the woman went into sudden labour, leaving passengers stunned and moved in equal measure.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman began experiencing intense labour pain while she was on the foot overbridge. As her condition worsened, people present at the station acted swiftly. Passengers created a makeshift enclosure using clothes to provide privacy, while nearby women stepped forward to assist the woman in distress.
With no immediate access to a hospital, the woman gave birth on the foot overbridge itself. Both the mother and the newborn were reported to be safe, thanks to the timely help extended by fellow passengers and railway personnel.
‘Meri Saheli’ Team Steps In
Upon receiving information, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) rushed to the spot. On-duty constable Dharmendra Kumar informed Assistant Sub-Inspector Pawan Kumar, who immediately alerted the station authorities and called for medical assistance.
The RPF’s Meri Saheli team, deployed to assist women passengers, played a crucial role in the incident. Woman constable Sonika Kumari reached the spot promptly and comforted the pregnant woman, identified as Mamta Devi. She encouraged her to remain calm and provided immediate support until medical help arrived.
Baby Girl Born on the Platform
Mamta Devi, a resident of Pipra village under Bela police station limits, delivered a baby girl. Shortly thereafter, doctors from the Railway Divisional Hospital, led by Dr Ravi Kumar Pandey, arrived at the station along with medical staff and provided primary medical care to both mother and child.
Doctors confirmed that both were healthy and out of danger. The woman’s mother-in-law, Kari Devi, said the family was on its way to Bela Medical Hospital when the incident occurred. Further treatment will be carried out under the supervision of family members.
The unusual birth at one of Bihar’s busiest railway stations has sparked conversations among passengers and locals alike, with many suggesting the need for better emergency medical facilities at major railway stations to handle such unforeseen situations.
