Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh: A serious controversy has erupted at a government school in Bilawar Kala village, Junnardeo, Chhindwara district, following allegations that a teacher is pressuring students to adopt Christianity and abandon their traditional practices. The complaint has prompted the police to launch an immediate investigation.
Students Allege Religious Conversion Pressure
Several students of Classes 10 and 12 lodged a written complaint on Tuesday at Junnardeo Police Station against teacher Seema Mathews and hostel superintendent Narendra Uike. According to the students, Mathews repeatedly discusses Christianity in class and encourages students to convert, advising tribal students to forsake their Hindu customs and traditions.
Tika and Kalawa Controversy
Students also stated that they are forced to remove their Tika or Kalawa upon entering the school. Those who refuse are allegedly threatened with Transfer Certificates (TCs). This has created a climate of fear and pressure among the students.
Hindu Organizations Raise Concerns
Following the complaint, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Kanhan Bachao Manch intervened. VHP district minister Nitesh ‘Golu’ Suryavanshi confirmed that the organizations received student complaints and subsequently submitted a memorandum to the Tribal Welfare Department and Collector, demanding action against the teacher. He emphasized that pressure on tribal children to abandon their traditions will not be tolerated.
Police Investigation Underway
Police have recorded student statements and launched a full investigation. City Inspector Rakesh Singh Baghel said the allegations are serious and are being treated as a priority case. Evidence and testimonies are being collected, and the investigation report will be submitted to senior authorities for further action.
Local residents and parents have expressed strong concern, stating that tampering with students’ faith and cultural practices is unacceptable. They demand a safe and impartial learning environment in the school.
