Sambhal, UP: Tensions erupted at a government primary school in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, after Quranic verses were found displayed on classroom walls in place of pictures of national figures. Activists from the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal alleged that the school management was promoting “Islamic propaganda” and staged a protest at the premises.
The incident took place at the Upper Primary School, Nagla Purva, in the Baniyakheda development block. On Friday, VHP department Satsang head, Rituparn Sharma, visited the school with workers and noticed images of Islamic religious sites along with Quranic verses near the headteacher’s office. When questioned, the headteacher reportedly failed to give a clear explanation, which escalated the situation.
Suspensions and Police Intervention
Following the protest, the Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) took swift action. Assistant Teacher Mohammad Nazim was suspended for removing pictures of national figures from the school. Meanwhile, Headmistress Pushpa Rani was also suspended after deficiencies were found during a mid-day meal inspection and for cutting down a 15-year-old neem tree on school premises without proper authorization.
The local Kudh Fatehgarh police arrived at the scene and assured action, helping to calm the agitated Bajrang Dal activists. Despite police intervention, the school remained tense for several hours as the protest continued.
Official Response
BSA Alka Sharma said, “We have taken strict action against those responsible for lapses. The assistant teacher has been suspended for removing images of national icons, and the headmistress has been suspended for violations regarding school property and mid-day meal irregularities. Proper decorum and respect for school norms will be ensured.”
The incident has sparked discussions on religious sensitivity, school governance, and adherence to official protocols in government schools.
