Mumbai: Comedian Kunal Kamra is facing escalating legal and political challenges. The Maharashtra Legislative Council’s Privileges Committee has summoned Kamra in connection with his controversial parody song and remarks targeting Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Alongside Kamra, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare has also been summoned.
According to the committee, Kamra and Andhare are required to appear before it on Thursday in Mumbai. The committee, headed by BJP member Prasad Lad, had issued notices to both individuals 15 days ago. Prasad Lad added that if they fail to appear even after two summons, the committee may decide on further action against them.
The notice was served following a complaint by BJP MLC Praveen Darekar, who accused Kamra and Andhare of making derogatory remarks against Shinde. Kamra, known for his outspoken and often politically provocative comedy, had last year released a parody of the song Dil To Pagal Hai, in which he indirectly labeled Shinde a “traitor” without mentioning him by name. Andhare publicly supported Kamra over the controversy.
Background of the Kamra-Shinde Controversy:
In March 2025, Kamra recorded a stand-up show in Mumbai where he parodied the popular song Dil To Pagal Hai, taking aim at Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. Kamra’s parody referred to Shinde as a “traitor” and a “turncoat,” sparking significant outrage. Shiv Sena’s Yuva Sena vandalized the studios where the recording took place. Though police filed cases against Kamra, he secured relief from the High Court. The controversy sparked nationwide debate over freedom of expression, with Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, publicly supporting Kamra.
