Cold Wave Intensifies in Uttar Pradesh: Westerly Winds Drop Temperatures, Dense Fog From Bareilly to Kanpur

With winter steadily tightening its grip over Uttar Pradesh, temperatures across the state have begun to slide sharply. Meteorologists have warned that the ongoing decline in minimum temperatures is likely to continue over the next 2–3 days, owing to the persistent flow of cold westerly winds. The drop is expected to be around 2–3°C, increasing the severity of the cold.

Although the weather is expected to remain dry on 24 November, several districts—particularly in western UP—are likely to experience dense fog, with visibility ranging between 50 to 200 metres. Eastern UP may witness light to moderate fog during early morning hours.

According to the forecast, 25, 26 and 27 November may also see clear skies statewide, but foggy mornings will continue on both eastern and western fronts. On 28 and 29 November, similar weather conditions are expected, with fog forming during morning hours before gradually lifting.

Dense Fog Disrupts Visibility Across Several Cities

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has clarified that no major weather system is currently active over the state. However, the dominance of westerly and north-westerly winds has intensified the cold and dryness in the atmosphere, creating favourable conditions for fog formation.

On Sunday morning, many regions remained covered in thick fog:

  • Bareilly: Visibility dropped to 0 metres, severely affecting morning commuters.
  • Moradabad: Recorded visibility of 50 metres (dense fog).
  • Kanpur: Visibility at 100 metres, also classified as dense fog.
  • Agra, Gorakhpur, Amethi: Moderate fog reported.
  • Ayodhya, Kushinagar, Varanasi, Azamgarh, Aligarh, Prayagraj: Light fog conditions prevailed.
  • Lucknow: The state capital recorded 600 metres visibility, indicating light fog.

Even after the fog cleared in most areas, a layer of haze persisted throughout the day, keeping temperatures low and the cold sensation intact.
