New Delhi: Residents of Delhi-NCR woke up to early morning rainfall on Thursday, signaling a sharp drop in temperatures and the onset of a cold spell in the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rainfall alert for today, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h. Light rain showers are expected in one or two spells from morning to afternoon across the city and surrounding areas, including Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram.
Record Warmth Followed by Sudden Cooling
Just a day earlier, Delhi experienced unseasonal warmth, with mercury touching 27.1°C—around seven degrees above normal—marking the hottest January day in the past seven years. The unusual heat was attributed to persistent warm easterly winds and clear skies, which allowed prolonged sunshine. IMD officials noted that western winds are generally cold at this time of year, while easterly winds bring warmth. The rains forecast for Friday are expected to lower temperatures significantly.
Temperature and Air Quality Outlook
IMD forecasts suggest maximum temperatures will drop to 18–20°C on Friday and further to 16–18°C on Saturday. If these predictions hold, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to improve, moving from the “Poor” category on Friday to “Moderate” by Saturday. A yellow alert for rainfall has been issued across Delhi.
Another Round of Showers Expected
Authorities have also warned of a possible second spell of light to moderate rain in the afternoon or evening. Residents have been advised to exercise caution due to strong winds and localized thunderstorms.
